I’m constantly getting emails from new traders asking me how they can get over the mental hurdle of clicking a mouse. We’ve all been there. In fact, I used to be so scared that I missed out on the first quarter of the internet boom. I over-analyzed every trade. They needed to look visually perfect or I couldn’t pull the trigger. And when I finally did enter a trade, I’d end up talking myself out of it the first minute it looked like it might go against me.
First off, you shouldn’t let yourself get depressed or worried, that fear is part of the natural process most traders go through.
There are plenty of psychology blogs on this topic that may be worth a look. However, I can share one thing that I think will work for all of you aspiring traders.
My tip for you is simple – let’s take the money aspect out of trading. If you’re scared to click a mouse, you’re not trading enough size to make money anyway. In a sick, twisted way, it’s a positive for this exercise. I believe paper trading is a complete waste of time. If you don’t have skin in the game, it’s too boring.
So try this out – buy 100 shares. Yup, you heard me right – 100 shares. You won’t make much money if you are right, but the point of these small purchases is to build up a mental inventory of applying a dollar value to a stock symbol. This process is crucial for building position sizing at later stages of your career. (Another topic for another time.) As you get more and more comfortable trading the 100 lot, your confidence will grow and you’ll gradually be able to add position size.
Try it out for a few weeks. Soon enough you’ll have the confidence to turn whatever trading strategy you choose into a consistently profitable one.
