Being a profitable trader is a huge part of who I am today. So, I think it’s only natural that I tend to think about a lot of the other aspects of life in terms of trading. It’s led me to come up with some fun analogies, one of which I want to share today.
When I was young I used to love watching Charlie Brown. My favorite time was in December when they would air “It’s a Charlie Brown Christmas” followed by “Frosty the Snowman at Christmas Time.”
Actually, I think we traders can gain some perspective by thinking about Charlie Brown a bit more. Let’s face facts — Charlie Brown is a manic-depressive kid who goes through life as a punching bag. Seriously, how many times can Lucy move the football just before he is about to kick it before he grows a pair? That Lucy is a world-class piece of work, by the way. She’s the reason there are 50% divorce rates in America. In fact, I saw that hussy — Ok, let me stop. But I’m watching you, Lucy.
Back to trading. New traders are like versions of Charlie Brown. We all started in that same place — the wide-eyed optimist that just can’t quite get it right. So we serve as the market’s punching bag, taking crap and coming back for more, day in and day out. We have all stepped up to kick the football only to have it pulled away by mother market like clockwork, leaving us on our butts over and over again.
When does the madness stop? For the majority of people, the answer is when there is no money left. 90% of traders are just one big episode of Peanuts. And it’s not their fault. We are all affected by this new social media age of warped information and incessant distractions. We are all products of a lack of education. Well, it’s time to toughen up Charlie Brown — get your sh*t together. Lucy will continue to abuse you if you don’t defend yourself. How many times can you chase the alpha and watch the rug get pulled out from underneath you? How many times can you convince yourself that the BTFD theory is the right thing to do? Stop the madness.
Forget what you did yesterday and today. Tomorrow is the day to start the rest of your trading life. You’ll be profitable as soon as you identify a process that works for you. Not somebody else, you. Trading successfully comes down to the process and defined risk. Can you go another day of being Charlie Brown?
