There’s always a debate amongst new traders over what trading style is the most effective. Everyone wants to know how to get the biggest bang for their buck.
First, you have your option traders. The theory behind option trading is to use less money to control more shares. However, the downside of it is that you’re always fighting time.
Then you have your swing traders. They use technical indicators to predict trends and then wait for nature to take its course. Of course, the downside of being a swing trader is that the waiting part exposes you to all those ‘wonderful’ things that can happen overnight. And the worst part about it is you have 50/50 casino odds of making a profit if you can’t read the charts properly.
Finally, there are the “scalpers” — a.k.a. day traders. Scalpers are viewed as the scum of the earth. The way other traders look down on them, you’d think they belong in the same sentence as ISIS, Hitler, and Bin Ladin. I mean, really. Who do they think they are, buying up stocks just to turn around and sell them right back for a quick buck? The arrogance.
I’ve been many things in the 16+ years that I’ve been trading. I’ve been a scalper and a swinger. (Oh behave! *Austin Powers voice*) The one thing I’ve learned from all of that experience is that the best trading style to use is the one that’s profitable. That’s right — the cat is out of the bag. There are numerous ways to get this alpha, and the common denominator between them all is profitability. As a professional trader, you don’t need to explain yourself to anyone. You’re an adult and you make your own decisions. The day that someone else tells you how to live your life is the day they start writing a check for your mortgage.
Whether you trade options, futures, or fixed income, stand up proud. And if you’re a scalper, hold your head high with your middle finger in the air saying that you are #1.
