Most new traders are constantly risking being put on tilt. Bear with me for a moment, and I’m going to tell you why.
There always seems to be a logical balance of power in the universe. Some kids grow up being scared to death of disappointing their parents, teachers, and friends. Then there’s another portion of kids who like to push the envelope and see what they can get away with. These kids will often mock authority and challenge their parents on just about everything.
Pretty much every one of us fell into one of those two categories growing up. Personally, I was a quiet and shy kid in my youth. God, what the hell happened to me? Ok anyway, let’s get back to the topic at hand. Although some kids act out and challenge authority, at the end of the day they are still kids and eventually they’ll figure it out.
Here’s where this gets into trading. I’d say the majority of traders are like the wild kids when they start out. They’ll chase candles, average down on bad positions, look for the hot trader to follow, and, of course, “take shots”. New traders want to see how much crap they can get away with before something bad happens.
Here’s the skinny: unlike a rebellious kid having a beer with his friends, new traders usually don’t have to wait long before trouble finds them. I don’t care if you believe in God or not. It’s your right to practice your religion of choice or none at all. However, you MUST respect the market gods. And the market gods work in strange ways. They will let you have your moment of ignorance. They may even let you make some money along the way. But, at some point, they have this twisted sense of humor and kinda… hmmm, how can I say this delicately? They will put your defiant, ignorant, rule-breaking ass on TILT!!!
That’s right, there is no tolerance for rule breakers. If you don’t give it due respect, the market will become persistently focused on separating you from your money. It won’t put up with your stupidity for any long period of time.
It’s cool to act out as a kid, but when you get into the real world of trading you have to respect the game. Get your education down, find a process that works, and follow all the rules.
As far as my kids go now… I married a Sicilian woman. She doesn’t play. Enough said.
