What makes a trading process valid? The obvious answer is consistent profits. There’s numerous ways you can choose to earn funds / Some get shot, locked down and turn nuns. *Damn, I need to stop listening to Mobb Deep during entries.
Now, where were we? Ah yes, the age-old question of how to evaluate a trading process. Here are some questions for you to ask yourself:
- Is your style exciting?
- Do you feel your heart racing when you trade?
- Are you compelled to watch every tick?
- Do you wake up in a cold sweat with nightmares of wicked candles against you?
There are many more questions to be addressed. However, if you answered yes to one or more of the questions above, you don’t have a trading process my friend — you have a gambling problem. Trading is all about probability and defined risk, so any successful process should be methodical and even snail-like in its approach. The moves should be measured and proper tier sizing should always be enforced. Scaling in or out is up to your personal preference but being proactive should be standard.
If your approach isn’t providing a clear path to the goal line and a technical exit then you are trading blind. The worst part of not having a definitive process is that you might make money accidentally sometimes and start adding more bad habits subconsciously as a result.
The moral of the story is that trading shouldn’t be fun. If you are still getting butterflies in your stomach at the opening bell, take a step back and reevaluate. Keep tweaking your process until the wind is at your back.
