You wake up every morning with tremendous confidence that you can do absolutely anything. It’s a magic carpet ride that will never end in your mind, with euphoria reaching such levels that you believe you can turn water into wine. Like Michael Jordan, you, my friend, are in the zone.
You’re reading the market dead on. The setups are clear and your sizing is perfect, not to mention that you’re able to recognize danger signs and cut losses quickly. And then, one day, it’s over.
No biggie. Can’t be perfect, right?
You wake up the next morning with the God-like attitude that a new streak is about to begin. But here’s the catch — no matter how talented an alpha hunter you are, there is this thing in trading called the “transfer of confidence”. It’s a game that the market gods play among us traders to keep things interesting. After a big run, you’ll often find yourself with back-to-back losing days. A couple days might even turn into a week. You find yourself pressing, forcing trades, and chasing candles. “What the heck is going on? What am I doing wrong?” You start to overthink your moves and your confidence is nowhere to be found.
The confidence isn’t gone altogether, it was simply transferred to another trader. Here is where the war against ourselves begins, and it’s another way to see the difference between consistently profitable traders and everyone else.
Going on a streak represents that you’re technically proficient with a great process and prudent money management. It represents that you have all the skills to be a professional alpha hunter. Your streak may come to an end, but you didn’t lose all that ability in a single week. Every seasoned trader has experienced magic streaks and horrific slumps. The ones who are mentally strong recognize what’s going on early and adjust their mindset so that they don’t press. They reduce their losses during the slump by being disciplined and waiting for premium opportunities. Soon afterward the “transfer of confidence” comes back home.
